What to expect when booking an Osteopathy Appointment.
Published on Sep 20, 2021

Covid has changed everything and has affected all of us. In the summer of 2020, after 14+ years I was forced to close my clinic in Milton Ontario and have since opened in my hometown Hamilton Ontario. Opening in Hamilton Ontario is a little different I have decided work out of my house. I have a dedicated treatment room for Osteopathic and Massage Therapy treatments.

Let’s start with the most asked question, what exactly is Osteopathy and what can it do for me?  Many people really do not know what Osteopathy is and think it is like a chiropractic, or a physiotherapy treatment. Osteopathy is a manipulative treatment like others, but we treat the body and not symptoms. Osteopathy’s philosophy is we believe the body can heal itself. (With a little help from us)

When you arrive, you will need to fill out a health history form. I know I know, not another form! However, the form helps you convey what is wrong and builds a health profile that is tailored to you.   After the paperwork is out of the way, I will continue to ask you questions. For example, are you having digestive issues along with your back pain?  Essentially, I am probing further to see what is wrong and to find the underlying issues, because we treat the body not the symptoms. These questions help to give me clues and decide what specific Osteopathic manipulation techniques I need to use. After I will take you through a visual and physical assessment, usually consisting of a postural analysis and some easy movements done by you or with my help. This further gives me a better idea of how your body moves and further how to treat the body with Osteopathy.

Osteopathy can be subtle in ways during treatment where you might not feel anything, but the body is a dynamic unit of many functions, and some Osteopathy techniques can affect the whole body in small ways having big impact. Our philosophy is to aid the body to naturally heal itself and when the Osteopathic treatment is over is when all the healing begins. Unfortunately, we can live in a fast-paced society that promotes “no pain – no gain” and people want instant results. We must remember it took time for this problem to arise and it takes time to peel away the layers, so sometimes you will get instant results from an Osteopathy treatment and other times it will be a process of continuous small improvements.

Osteopathy is covered under most health benefit plans, check with your provider.
